Swirling air raised the lake
in the chamber of escarpments,
then moved into the cedars.
We walked the tributaries
and rested among jonquils,
deer were still as her breathing.
The forest turned the rain green,
but the empty leaves were clear,
a couple on horseback passed.
Back at the house,
a friend told stories with clean bones,
I couldn't sleep
even with the heavy rainfall
caressing the metal rooftop.
By morning the water was glass,
lightning throbbed in the burnt ground,
she had no need of mirrors.
